This is the shocking moment police shot and killed a double amputee as he attempted to flee on his stumps.
Anthony Lowe Jr, 36, was shot at least eight times by three cops at the Huntington Park Police Department in California, US, on Thursday after attempting to jump out of his wheelchair.
According to police, the father of two had just stabbed a member of the public with a butcher knife and was attempting to flee the scene.
Two officers pursued him, and video footage shows Mr Lowe standing outside his wheelchair next to cops, holding a butcher knife.
He quickly tries to turn away from the officers and flee.
When a second police car arrives, a third cop gets out and tasers Mr Lowe, according to police, but it was “ineffective.”
Officers fired multiple shots into Mr Lowe’s chest as he lay on the ground within 15 seconds of the third officer arriving on the scene.
He was apprehended but died at the scene.
“The suspect was tased at least twice by Huntington Park Officers, but the deployment of the taser was ineffective,” the LA County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
“The suspect attempted to throw the butcher knife at the officers again, at which time an officer involved shooting occurred.”
Mum Dorothy Lowe has hit out at police for their actions towards her son and has demanded to know they murdered him.
She said: “They murdered my son, in a wheelchair with no legs. They do need to do something about it.”
According to his family, Mr Lowe had lost the lower half of his legs recently following a different argument with police in Texas.
Ellakenyada Gorum, his cousin, claims police are refusing to give the family information about the incident that resulted in cops shooting the father.
“They refuse to give us everything we need to know about what really happened to him,” she said.
“He was not homeless, he was loved. And it’s sad, really sad, that they’re getting away from killing our African American people, just getting away with it. He was in a wheelchair. What more could he do? What more could he do?
“You guys knew your lives wasn’t in danger. He’s running on his limbs. How cold-hearted could they be?”
The LA County Sheriff’s Office confirmed they are now investigating the incident.
