The Military High Command has authorized a “swoop” on the Ashaiman township on March 4, 2023, in search of the killers of a young soldier.

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) issued a press release this morning to refute claims that the military was acting to avenge the death of the late Sherrif Imoro.

The full press release is as follows:

GAF wishes to state unequivocally that the military operation authorized by the Military High Command was NOT to avenge the soldier’s death, but rather to apprehend the perpetrators of the heinous crime.”

Personnel from the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) conducted a man-hunt in Ashaiman and its environs on Tuesday 7 March 2023, in search of some criminals suspected of stabbing and killing a young soldier (Trooper Imoro Sherrif) in the early hours of Saturday 4 March 2023, at Ashaiman-Taifa.

Trooper Sherrif, who is stationed in Sunyani, was in Accra on a Course and had requested permission to visit his parents in Ashaiman, where he grew up, but he was discovered in a pool of blood in the early hours of Saturday near the Amania Hotel in Ashaiman.

GAF wishes to state unequivocally that the military operation authorized by the Military High Command was NOT to avenge the soldier’s death, but rather to apprehend the perpetrators of the heinous crime.

Following the operations in Ashaiman-Taifa and Tulaku, military personnel apprehended approximately 184 suspects ranging in age from 21 to 47 years old and turned them over to the Military Police, who then forwarded them to the Ghana Police Service for screening and further action.

During the swoop, personnel seized 29 slabs and 57 mini slabs of suspected indian hemp and amnesia, among other narcotics.

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) would also like to state that the raid was not directed at innocent civilians, but rather was an intelligence-led operation conducted on suspected criminal hideouts and crime-prone areas in the surrounding area.

GAF acknowledges, however, that some innocent people may have been caught up in the operation and, as a result, experienced some distress as a result of their location at the time.

In order to reduce criminal activity, GAF wishes to urge the general public to provide useful information, assist security agencies in weeding out criminals and miscreants from our communities, and refrain from shielding and conspiring with such suspects.
