The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, and the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, have clashed, this time over Johnson Asiedu Nketia’s appointment to the Parliamentary Service Board.
Mr Alban Bagbin told the House on Monday, March 29, of his decision to select the members of the Council.
Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, in his submission refused to contest the Speaker’s decision, saying that he had no intention of putting the House into disrepute.
Despite his disagreement with Alban Bagbin, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu stated that he will not appeal his decision.
However, some members of the Advisory Committee told the Speaker that the NDC’s General Secretary’s appointment to the Board may amount to an unwanted intrusion into the governance of Parliament by a political party and may not in the circumstances bode well for the independence of parliament since he [Asiedu Nketa] is the General Secretary of a major political party.
However, the Speaker claims that the only authority given by laws to nominate members of the Board makes Asiedu Nketia to be named.
The six-member Service Board includes Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, MP for Suame, Haruna Iddrisu, MP for Tamale South, Abraham Osei Adu, former MP for Wenchi West, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the Clerk to Parliament, and the Speaker who also serves as moderator.
