Minority leader in Ghana’s Parliament, Mr. Haruna Iddrisu has indicated that, Ghana’s Finance Minister, Mr. Ken Ofori Atta has created a mess in the sector and must be made to carry the cross.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament to second the motion for the approval of Mr. Ken Ofori Atta as Finance Minister, Mr. Haruna Iddrusu indicated that his side is not convinced with some answers he provided during the vetting.
According to him, Mr. Ken Ofori Atta cannot be right, if he scrutinized the mineral resources of the country in the name of borrowing.
“Mr. Speaker, we are not convinced that Ghana as a country need to securitize our mineral resources for the purposes of borrowing. Particularly that in the 2020 period some 230 million was realized as windfall from royalties from our mineral resources”. Mr. Haruna Iddrisu indicated.
He also added that Ken Ofori Atta’s intention to establish a National Bank cannot be accepted. He says the Agriculture Development Bank and the National Investments Bank have the capacity of performing the same functions at which the National Bank is being established.
“He also spoke about the establishment of a National Bank, we think that he must capitalize the National Investment and Agricultural Development Banks so that they can play their functional roles”. He noted.

Mr. Haruna Iddrisu further intimated that the allocation of the District Assembly Common Fund must follow a Supreme Court ruling some time ago.
“We also think that in the allocation of the District Assembly Common Fund, Ken Ofori Atta must respect the Supreme Court ruling on Kpodo versus Attorney General and others in ensuring that five percent of the total revenue is allocated for that particular purpose”. Mr. Haruna Iddrusu added.
He concluded that “we think Ken Ofori Atta has created a mess as Finance Minister and he must carry the cross for that”.
