Melissa Wolke: How Kentucky woman gets 20 years for siccing pit bull on man,

killing him

A Kentucky woman who admitted to commanding her pit bull to kill a man by attacking him was given a 20-year prison term on Monday.

Conway resident Melissa Wolke, 40, admitted in October of killing Donald Abner, 55, on January 10, 2020. According to testimony from the police, Wolke’s neighbor spotted her hitting Abner at her house while telling her pit bull, “Good boy, get him,” and alerted the authorities.

A portion of the alleged attack was purportedly caught on film by the neighbor, who afterwards erased it because it was “awful to watch.”

According to WTVQ at the time, Wolke needed to be tased to remove her from Abner. She also resisted calling off the pit bull, Denali, a former fighting dog, even after the police showed up.

The animal was so violent, according to the police, that they had to shoot him there and then.

According to Kentucky State Police Trooper Scottie Pennington, “She used her animal, a pit bull, as a weapon to help her in this conflict.”

Detective Ryan Loudermilk of the State Police testified immediately after the assault that Wolke was upset and crying after it. She allegedly said, “Oh my God, I went redneck on him.”

She eventually confessed to detectives that she had a history of binge drinking even though she couldn’t remember the altercation. An empty bottle of Jagermeister was the only alcoholic beverage found there.

Abner allegedly lived with Wolke for about three months prior to the attack. Wolke confirmed to investigators that they had been friends for about two decades.

Although the Rockcastle County coroner reported bite wounds on Abner’s neck and face, his official cause of death was determined to be asphyxiation. He’d also fractured a bone in his neck.
