The has been so much hullabaloo about the nomination of Asiedu Nketia into the Parliamentary Service Board. Members of the New Patriotic Party have argued that this move will politicize Parliament. Those of the NDC, especially Mahama Ayariga has countered that Parliament is already a political venue and thus this adds nothing.
Citi FM’s Umaru Sanda Amadu got the chance to interview Asiedu Nketia on ‘Face to Face’ and one of the issues discussed was his appointment and the critics of his appointment. According to Asiedu Nketia, his appointment is in a good place and he is surprised that people are complaining.
“I think it’s interesting when people say my appointment will politics into Parliament. Parliament is the citadel of politics. The criterion of the Board was to be a former member of Parliament and I have been an MP for 12 years so I qualify. The Parliamentary Service Board is like the Audit Serve Board. You are like the Auditor General.
Usually, the Speaker nominates people from his side. Speaker Bagbin has been very magnanimous in allowing NPP to nominate one person (Hon. Kyei Mensah Bonsu) from their side to join. So I was surprised when I heard that the NPP was objecting to Bagbin’s nomination as a member. He shouldn’t have allowed any of them even one. Alban is my friend and I have supported him many times” Asiedu Nketia remarked.
It’s interesting to note that Alban Bagbin has broken the jinx by allowing someone from the other side of his party to join the Board since a Speaker always chooses people from his party to join. Maybe Asiedu Nketia is right to say the Speaker has been magnanimous. However, knowing the caliber of Alban Bagbin we can say that he is not partisan and seeks the best for the country.
